Policy on Use of All Souls Church Name and Banner
Draft
We recognize that our good name is one of the church's most valuable assets. This policy seeks to govern the use of the church name in such a way that is consistent with our Mission and Ends.
Use of Name in Publicity and Media
The official name of the church is "All Souls Church, Unitarian." When communicating in public about the name of the church, all effort should be made to use the church's official name, "All Souls Church, Unitarian." If there is more than one reference to the church in one communication, subsequent references may use abbreviations such as "All Souls Church" or simply, "All Souls."
Speaking on Behalf of the Church
In seeking to further its Mission and Ends, the church and/or its implementers will seek to use the church's name in support of various events/causes/positions/groups/etc. In all cases, public use of the church name should conform to the following guidelines:
- The church's name should only be used to support events/causes/positions/groups that further the church's Mission and Ends.
- The church's name should only be used in a manner consistent with maintaining the good name and reputation of the church.
Once these criteria are met, there are two ways that the church's name can be used:
- A particular group within the church can lend its name in support of various causes, simply by getting the o.k. from the church administrator. The church administrator will evaluate the request based on the two criteria above. If necessary, the administrator will consult with the entire Executive Team.
In such cases, the church's name would be qualified by the name of the particular group in the church that is lending its support. For example: "The Social Justice Ministry of All Souls Church, Unitarian." Or "The 7th Principle Task Force of All Souls Church, Unitarian."
- In special circumstances, a group will seek to lend the support of the ENTIRE church to an event/cause/position/group. This may be done ONLY with the approval of the congregation or its elected representatives, the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees will decide if they, alone, can approve/deny the request, or if they will call a congregational meeting for the purpose of lending the entire church's support to a cause.
Individual Speech
When ministers, staff and church members are in public on church business, they can identify themselves as affiliated with the church by using the church's name. On such occasions, individuals should speak on their own behalf, unless they have been given the authority to speak for a group in the church, or the church as a whole.
The Church Banner
The Church will maintain in good condition a banner that serves as a symbol of our church and its name. The banner may be used for sanctioned denominational activities such as District Assembly or General Assembly without any other approval.
The use of the church banner for other uses will be governed by the same criteria as the use of the church name, above.
Groups and activities are encouraged to make signs or banners that indicate the support of their particular group, according to the guidelines in #1 above.
