Do you want to improve your speaking, pronunciation, and listening skills in English? Do you just want to get more comfortable having a conversation in English? All Souls Church offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and tutoring for adults.

You will work one-on-one and in small groups with trained volunteer teachers/tutors. Choose from three levels of instruction to match your knowledge of English. We will help you determine which level is right for you.

Our students

Our students have come from over 30 different countries, including China, Myanmar, Japan, Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, Ethiopia, Togo, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal, and many of our southern neighbors—Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Chile, Nicaragua, Argentina, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia.

Their English language ability ranges from no English at all to conversational English that they wish to improve.

All Souls congregants: Is ESL your ministry?

All Souls’ English as a Second Language (ESL) program, which serves adult students from all over the world, is social justice in action! Two 12-week semesters are held each year, between September and May. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available. No previous teaching experience or second-language skills are necessary.

  • Teachers. Teaching takes place on Sunday afternoons, 1:00 – 2:45 pm. A mandatory teacher training is held on a Sunday prior to each semester.
  • Tutors. Tutors meet one-on-one with a student at a time and location that works for both the tutor and student. Many tutors meet with students at places like a local coffee shop or library. Tutors review material learned in the Sunday classes and practice conversation with the student.
  • Outreach. Distribute fliers at your workplace and in your neighborhood to announce the next semester. Help us contact organizations that serve immigrants in All Souls’ neighborhood to let them know about our classes.
  • Administrators. Help out one Sunday per month by registering new students, guiding students to their classrooms, tracking attendance, etc.
